*The following is an adaptation of a prayer I offered on behalf of our church yesterday in observing Sanctity of Human Life Sunday. I’ve changed it slightly for relevance today, January 20, 2025.
Today is a federal holiday, as we recognize, every third Monday in January, Martin Luther King Jr. Day.
But today is also Inauguration Day—every four years on January 20.
Both of these landmarks on our calendar can invoke division and strong emotions—especially in recent years. But, as God’s people, let us put on Greater Kingdom lenses and ask for God’s hand of mercy for this world.
I want to lead us in a prayer for goodness and human flourishing.
…
God, you sit enthroned in the heavens. These days of chaos and turmoil do not surprise you or threaten your reign.
God, as you have given us eyes to see with compassion, we long for your help in this world. Our trust is in You, not in human systems.
God, as you’ve called us to pray, would you work in and through leaders—as you guide them? Would you work despite frail and deceived leaders—as you correct and temper them?
Would you give President Trump wisdom? Would you give President Biden rest? Would you draw both of them to submit to Jesus?
God, as Dr. King reminded us from the Scriptures, this world is not as it should be. Injustice and evil still permeate every society—even ours.
Would you bring human flourishing—for all people?
Would Christ’s healing overcome this darkness? Would you use your church as agents of light?
As we pray alongside other churches for the sanctity of all human life, would you be the Great Rescuer and the Great Redeemer?
God, please move powerfully.
Amen
